- LETTER FROM SENATOR BOB BROWN (GREENS) 16/01/06 -

Dear Mary,

Thankyou for your email. The Greens are opposed, on principle, to the use of the death penalty in any circumstances whether for drug dealers or otherwise. The following is a media release by Senator Bob Brown:

Euthanasia rights must be faced by body politic - Brown

Senator Brown, 20th December 2005

The right of adults facing a prolonged and undignified death to opt for euthanasia - a good death - remains a major issue for Australian society, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

Senator Brown said he was heartened by the court's decision not to jail Catherine Anne Pryor yesterday. Senator Brown introduced Death with Dignity legislation into the Tasmanian Parliament in 1984 when he was a member of the state parliament.

"It is estimated that humanitarian doctors aid 2,000 people to die earlier and avoid suffering each year in Australia. This covert humanitarianism should be legalised as in a number of European countries and Oregon in the US," Senator Brown said.

Bob also received the 1997 Inaugural Bob Dent, Euthanasia campaigner of the year award from Phillip Nitschke. He can be contacted by email at <senator.bob.brown@aph.gov.au> if you should wish to make further inquiries.

I've taken the liberty of copying this response to Senator Brown for his information. If you'd like to discuss the matter further, or raise any other issues, please don't hesitate to contact us.
