Dear Ms Mortimer

Thank you very much for your prompt and comprehensive reply to my recent enquiry.

I am of course aware that elections cannot be reduced to “single issue” contests however, at my age (a mere 75 years), I am seeing ever more of my friends, acquaintances and former colleagues going down roads I have no wish to travel.

It is not my intention that people of indifferent health should, after a given age, “be put down” – I do however want to deny the government and the diverse pressure groups, the right to plug me into a life support machine and / or charge with murder, manslaughter or unethical behavior, doctors who may be inclined to concur with my wishes regarding end of life decisions as expressed in various, as yet not legally binding documents, completed by me.

As you state, and is also quietly admitted: a form of euthanasia can take place under the guise of palliative care.

I want that my doctor can comply with my wishes without the fear of some nursing staff with inflexible “moral” persuasions causing him to be prosecuted for helping me to ease out of this life. It is for this reason alone I see appropriate legislation is essential.

I do not deny the rights of those who wish to linger on.

I do deny the right of those people to dictate that I should do likewise.

To your points 1) 2) and 3)

* If indeed people flee Holland for fear of euthanasia, another group go there, and to Switzerland , as they did here in the Northern Territory , in order to escape the legal restraints of their own country.

* Re Population Control: Please tune in to Minister Tony Abbott who is fiercely anti euthanasia and totally opposed to the abortion pill.

* Not For Resuscitation: Ambulance Officers are duty bound to resuscitate even if you had Do Not Resuscitate tattooed on your forehead.

Again, thank you for your time and thoughts on this matter and I wish the outcome of the forthcoming election may be encouraging for you.

Kind regards
