Dear Editor

Please find enclosed herewith for your awareness copies of two self-explanatory letters, one by way of representation for circulation to all politicians and the other by way of reply to Senator Chris Ellison Minister for Justice.

As Townsville Bulletin journalist would be aware, the vote on the Criminal Code Amendment ( Suicide Related Material Offences ) Bill 2005, is set to take place in the parliament today, Thursday 23rd.

With this proposed misguided legislation being an iniquitous government initiative, on balance it can be likened to the government practicing unsanctioned censorship where the public interest is concerned.

Whilst approximately 70-80% upwards of those surveyed in the past and most recent, supporting self-determination as a civil right where end of life decisions are concerned, thus prompts me to suggest that all politicians as the peoples elected representatives should be asking themselves a few poignant questions.

In good conscience an as a moral imperative, one such question ought to be, “Why should ailing people experiencing a miserable prelude to death be denied via draconian legislation, unfettered access to valued supportive internet, Fax or phone information or counselling in their time of most need”.

Such legislation, that eliminates society’s freedoms and rights is illogical, especially when in some instances, suffering terminally ill people are being forced to endure against their will to the very end when all they really want is to be mercifully, medically assisted to die.

The above and enclosed is for your perusal and consideration.

Yours truly

Ron Bennett
